Testimony & Call to Ministry

I was saved at the age of six as a result of the ministry at First Baptist Church of Hackensack, New Jersey. The lead pastor at the time was Pastor Crabb, and during the course of two weeks in the Evening Worship Service he spent time going through Scripture and explaining the sinful and lost condition of man, the inability of man to change that condition, the love of God in sending His Son to pay the penalty of man’s sin on the cross, and the need to trust Christ in order to have my sins forgiven and a relationship with God. I knew that the person he was describing was me. So after the Evening Worship Service, while at home, I told my dad that I did not believe that I had a relationship with God. He then sat down with me in his bedroom and went through the plan of salvation once again. Afterwards we knelt by his bed and prayed, at which time I admitted to God that I was a sinner, that I believed in Christ’s death on the cross to pay the penalty for my sins, and that I wanted to commit my life to him. One year later I was baptized in the same church.

Growing up, I had my share of ups and downs in my relationship with Christ, as most children and teenagers do, but thankfully God kept me from involving myself in certain things that many of my friends were doing that would have really done some damage in my life. Upon graduating high school, I was not completely sure what it was that God wanted me to do. I knew that I had been gifted with the ability to teach, but I did not want to pursue ministry solely because my dad was in ministry and everyone thought that I should. However, I recognized that I needed to be in a good environment as I started out college. As a result I applied and was accepted to Baptist Bible College in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. It was there that God began to work in my life in order to call me into the ministry. My freshman year, the Lord made it possible for me to be in a traveling singing group called the Chamber Singers. As a result of being in the ministry groups and visiting so many different churches, God began to work in my life to cause me to see service to Him and His church as something wonderful and fun. Growing up as a pastor’s kid, I kind of lost that a little bit. Along with this, God was also working through one of the classes I was taking at school. The class was the study of the book of Joshua, and during this class, the professor basically preached a sermon to us every class. I loved it, and as a result of seeing the passion of my professor in teaching and preaching and teaching through the book of Joshua, and after considering the example of Joshua being called by God to lead His people, I knew that God wanted me to be a part of His work. It was then that I claimed as my life verse 1 Timothy 3:12-14 which says, “And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.”
